ufone Smart U5a did not create the ripples like the first model Smart U5 since ufone did not deliver their promises and did a really bad job with U5. Smart U5a however is definitely a step on the right track.

Before moving ahead, remember we are talking about a Rs,7000 machine and not Rs.70,000 so do not mixed them up.

7,000 Pakistani Rupees for this ufone locked, 3G enabled Android Kitkat smartphone is not a bad deal with 1GB RAM, Quad-core processor, Adreno 305 GPU. 4-inch screen might be smaller for many users including myself. The manufacturer could easily fix a 4.3 inch display in this size and that would be more than desirable for consumers. I have used a 4.3 inch display on to same sized device and this .3 size in display made a huge difference in usability.

In other specs U5a have got a Front facing cam and 8MP Main camera with Flash. 4GB of total storage in which 2GB will be available to users after removing preinstalled apps. Proximity, light and accelerometer are given in sensors department.

I loved the performance of U5a. The first move of your finger tip on the screen will give you the sense of smoothness. I throw some nasty load on it and U5a tackled it well. Camera result is not something to talk about, it is very average.

One thing however seems either faulty or slow, same as Smart U5. The Accelerometer is not fine-tuned and takes some time in detecting the device's Tilt direction. In a fast paced game, that time is enough to crash you into something. Now I don't know if this is happening only in my unit or other users are experiencing the same.

On the built, it has better looks and feel over U5. U5a is slimmer but slightly larger. No more of the textured back that we have on U5, and I will miss that.

So Good Gaming, Good Video playback, Good Browsing, Good Smooth day to day phone and app functions, good connectivity options, doable camera and Flash seems to be a better than decent smartphone to buy for secondary or outdoor purpose in the price of Rs.7000.

3G, Price and "Quad-core" are the cards Ufone playing to seduce people into buying their exclusive Smart U5. But should you buy Smart U5?

The phone appears to be good as we repeatedly mentioned. Smart U5 is good on paper for sure except for 512mb ram. And for as long as you don't chock it with apps Smart U5 performed very decent. However As soon as I filled it with apps and games it literally started to chock on us. Apps start crashing, smooth transaction turned into seconds-long lag and what not.

From my personal experience of using various budget Androids, I believe Smart U5 has very strong hardware but the Android OS optimization is not up to the mark. In my guts I feel that KitKat update will turn U5 into much more powerful machine, which it meant to be.

Having said that, games that are able to run on the device runs smooth. Of course U5 will not run top quality games for one reason or another but the few games by now we checked was flawless. You are welcome to check the video.

Calling quality is superb, sound however from main speaker is not loud.

Despite "Built for Multitasking" tag, Smart U5 is failed to do so in effective way but as long as you do one thing at a time you are good with it.

Camera is not good at all for the indoor and flash barely make a difference in many cases. In day light camera produce acceptable result but do not look for any groundbreaking output.

So who should buy Smart U5 from Ufone?
It is confusing even for me to answer at this moment. I like it, and I don't like it but I am hoping to like it better after company provides Kitkat Update.

If you have an expensive and large Android and you do not feel safe to take it out with you, take Smart U5 as Backup phone for outdoor.

After using Smart U5, I am not recommending it to my productive friends. I will be waiting for Android KitKat update. If you are a patience person, buy it and wait or any update from manufacturers to turn Smart U5 to its full potential.

Is it Android?
The words are in market that "Nokia X is not an Android".

It is the same Android but yes Nokia did change it to offer a more simpler User Experience, and they remove Google centric apps to add their own apps. And they listed it as Nokia X Platform in their spec-sheet, but it is almost every bit of Android.

Samsung, Sony, Huawei and HTC are using their own "Launcher" and their own set of apps and store along with Google's. But they made their Launchers similar to Android's and they did not remove Google Centric apps and they are not calling Android with a different name.

Nokia prioritize their own apps for users to utilize their services by removing Google apps, which I believe is a mistake and Nokia will have to find another way to co-exist with Google.

For a new user to Android, or to Smartphone I see no trouble for them to understand and adjust to the changes Nokia did in Android.

However if you are a regular Android user and try to use Nokia X as just another Android, it will not be a walk in the park and you might have a hard time going through its learning curves. I know I have!

Having said that, UI of Nokia X is very easy and straight forward, all of the apps will stay on the home screen and you can arrange it to your requirements. Swipe to left or right and you have all of your notifications. Nokia named it "FastLane". It is more of a Log of your usage.

Nokia, Android, Apps and Stores
Some of Asha and Symbian users have been showing concern for not having enough apps in Nokia Store. What they don't realize is that this Nokia Store is different and so is the OS. Unlike Asha or Symbian, developers across the world are creating all type of apps and games for Android very actively, and adding an Android app to Nokia's Android store is just as easy as uploading.

Well, we all know zombies are great making humankind run for their lives, or brains to be specific. How do I feel about the Game
I am not too much into this type of games so part of me like the game play. I repeatedly play several games in a series to see how long I can take it before I am bored of it. And it didn't take too long for me as expected.

Game has interesting start for sure. The graphics are done well, the racing course, planted hurdles and powers were nice touch indeed to keep game interesting for users, but for how long? That's one good question.

Personally I missed controlling the pace of my zombie. There should be a way to speed it up a few steps under my control and jumping could be it.

Now that Nokia X, the first serious attempt from Nokia in the land of Android is only few days away to show off officially at MWC 2014, both excitement and questions from Nokia fans and tech lovers are raising.

Questions like why is Android so important for Nokia and/or for Microsoft? And why not attempting a high-end Android? In simple straight forward words - to survive the market competition without compromising high-end Lumia territory.

Nokia X is for low-end smartphone market, to stand against budget Android and other upcoming competition in that zone. But the current threat is the growing use of budget Androids in markets that matters.

The days are gone when budget Android phones suck the fun and life out of mobile users. Today's budget Android smart phones are worth owing because they don't suck anymore. Just to be clear I am not talking about Moto G budget, I am talking about China-made budget Androids that cost a lot less than a hundred dollars. They too have become very capable and most importantly they are priced lower than Nokia's lowest of Asha.

Budget Lumia and Asha are doing well in sales but it clearly isn't good enough. Lumia (or WindowsPhone) will success eventually but Lumia is not for low-end smart phones market and will never be.

The market Nokia is targeting with Asha is leaning back to new budget Androids. Those are the consumers switching either from feature phones or taking them to use as a secondary phone. Mobiles with Android Jellybean powered by dual core processor works very well without making users' life a hell like it used to several months ago. And why Android? Because Android packs a lot more attraction for consumers than Asha for the same or less price.

Companies like MicroMax sidelined big brands including Nokia and Samsung in India using that said attraction. Same trend has been happening in Pakistan by QMobile and Voice.

In Pakistan the lowest of Asha 500 is available for 8,000 Pakistani Rupees. In contrast a very capable dual-core Android phone cost 7,000 pkr. Prices of Asha 502 and 503 are above 10,500 pkr and in that price range even better Android phones are available that can play games like GTA.

I myself had to replace Asha 501 to a budget Android for 2 things. Price and productivity tools/apps. And I am very satisfied.

In short it is easier for young and new mobile users to ditch either budget Nokia Lumia or Asha for something ^better^ and ^cheaper^.

But are these budget Androids are as durable as Nokia? No. Are their build is as supreme as Nokias? Not always. Are their camera is as powerful as Nokias? Of course not. Are their resale value is as beneficial as Nokias? No. Are their touch screen as sensitive and fast as Nokias? Not at all. And these are the things that can help Nokia to win low-end smartphone consumers back.

Come back to price and Nokia's Android, rumored price of the first Android from Nokia is 110$, and it may go to sale for around 12,000 Pakistani rupees. Will that price do Nokia any good against Androids coming to 10,000 pkr? I think it should with the right advertising message.

Only draw back for Nokia X left is the apps. Lack of access to Play Store can give Nokia a hard time but luckily developers might not have to spend too much of extra efforts in getting their apps on to the new store.

To success, Nokia have to get this product 99% right to gain the consumers' trust. Nokia X better not be a beta test device for their sake and deliver best possible experience for the price.

Xtreme V10 is not made for everyone, and it is a shame since with slightest improvement it can be an ideal smart phone for just about everyone. But for Rs. 7,300 it is an Android smartphone that can perform very well.

What is good about Xterme V10? Size and price.

I have been avoiding low-spec Android phones after seeing their performances in past. But as technology improved and costs are cut down, today's low-spec Android improved significantly. I had to change my mind after experiencing improvements in hardware and software in these low-spec phones.

Voice and QMobile are going head to head for your hard earned cash you have in your pockets with V10 and A30/34. Both devices are small in size and little under 7,500 Pakistani Rupees. Very attractive range for consumers and students to tempt them in buying a full ^modern^ Android handset everyone is talking about.

QMobile have advantage of longer brand presence through country and extremely expensive advertisements with well known celebrities. A large numbers of people using QMobile phones across the country show that consumers are trusting in QMobile.

Voice is relatively a new name for consumers but the brand is giving warranty from United Mobiles, a stronger household name in Pakistan for quality assurance of mobile phones and services. The competition will be interesting and I can only hope to know the results.

QMobile calling their A30/34 a family phone, which I believe referring to a middle-class family phone considering the TV commercial, price and specifications. At this range of 7,500 Pakistani Rupees, both companies seems to target market-share belongs to Nokia Asha phones, which are kind of Java mobile phones with really modern look and feel and not to mention impressive trusted build quality of Nokia that last pretty long.

On papers both smart phones have 3.5 inch screens, 256mb Ram, Android 4.2, Dual core processor and 2mp camera.

From my personal use of a 3.5 inch display for 3 years, I can say it is not a bad size. But the range of apps and games Android offers, you may feel restrained if you use your mobile to its potential. On the other hand, compare to 4inch and larger screens, 3.5inch screen mobile phones are ideal to carry in pockets. 256ram in both handsets wouldn't allow you to install heavy game and you will be forced to install very limited apps so maybe you would find 3.5 inch screen size very fitting.

By now, not one but several people asked me on different occasions which one between Ainol Numy AX1 and Asus MeMo Pad HD 7 is better. I own and have been enjoying Numy AX1 by Ainol personally as my daily driver from some time so obviously I am confident about what Numy offers.

But knowing Asus MeMo Pad HD7 a short while back, my suggestion now simply is, take Asus MeMo Pad HD7 even if it is out of your range. That thing is a sweet beast. Crisp IPS screen and 10 hours of battery alone is enough to justify its price. There are 2 versions, 8gb storage and 16gb, and in Pakistan you will find different prices range from Rs. 16,000 to 18,000 for 8gb.

You asked me if it is better than AX1? I tell you Asus MeMo Pad HD 7 is pronounced even better than Google Nexus 7 so it obviously tops Numy AX1.

It is important to remember that Asus MeMo Pad HD7 is purely a tablet, not a Phablet, which means there are not a single Phone functions in it. You cannot insert SIM nor do SMS where Ainol Numy AX1 is a 7inch Phablet, Dual Sim GSM complete with every Phone functions.

Asus MeMo Pad HD7 delivers 10 hours usage time but the side effect of having the luxury of 10 hours battery juice comes with thicker profile. Asus MeMo Pad HD7 is not a slim tablet but it has got plenty of juice unlike regular China made tablets that have 5 hours battery time max.

One of the questions I get to hear often is if Android Tablet/Smart Phone runs full Microsoft Office.

I personally witness most of the salesmen told their customers they can run full Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) on the Android tablets they are selling. While it is true to some level, at the same time it is a misleading statement comes from guys who have hardly work on either Microsoft Office or Android devices properly.

As of writing this article dated November 2013, there is no official Office application from Microsoft is on Google Play Store, which means No you cannot run Microsoft Office on your Android smart phone or tablet. The good news is there are alternates to MS Office available for Android in Play Store.

There are dozens of free and paid Office Applications that let you work on Microsoft Office documents including Words, Excel and PowerPoint files. You can create new documents and edit in existing MS Office files. Some Office apps are great Microsoft Office replacements but the most important thing you need to remember that none of them will provide you 100% functionality of a PC version of MS Office.

All of the available Microsoft Office alternates have their own strengths and flaws. A user has to adjust to available functionalities and work around the limitations. Every person has different use of Office so you may need to try more then one Office app to find which is more suitable to your requirements.

Who wouldn't want to be Thor so I grabbed my copy for Android. Opening sequence was how it should be for Marvel's one of the iconic heroes and member of Avengers. Evil Dark Elf and his army attacked Thor's world with aim to conquer his and the other worlds.

I couldn't record the opening sequence in video because once game started there is no "New Game' option. The only way I figured is reinstalling the game, which is in my to-do list.




Thor is a fun, entertaining adventure game with rich graphics and great environment. Game play however did not deliver me the joy I was hoping for due to the game controlling. It was clearly not of my taste. I did play two levels before giving up but I had no idea how I was doing it the entire way. I prefer more control over where I move and what I do. A virtual game pad would really make my wish came true for this game and I might play longer.

But thousands of players around the world loved Thor game and game play. Missions are simple, game doesn't seem to give complexity or tough puzzles but giving you mighty evil monsters to slam on. During the game you will be unlocking your secret powers, learning new skills and earning stronger armors.

You are not fighting this battle alone. You can summon your soldiers and allies to fight by your side you will be unlocking as you advanced in game. I really want to play more of Thor: The Dark World game to experience all of it.

Video clips will complete the story and link you to the next level.

Game controller is easy, despite my complain it is really easy to play the game on the touch screens. To move/walk you tap on the path and Thor follows your direction. You tap to an enemy soldier and comes Thor's mighty hammer to smash off your enemy. Use two fingers tap to throw the hammer. There are other gestures available for power moves such as thunderbolt.

And this easy controlling is exactly why I am having problem with; it is too easy for my taste. I had to move my hand all over the screen and I cannot see what is going on down there.

"Writer is a writing application without the fuss and distraction of traditional word processor" says James McMinn the developer of Writer for Android.

Writer is a simplest free text editor available on Android, with a twist that standouts and make Writer more functional from hundreds of other pure text/note editors available in Google Play.

App developer designed Writer to avoid distractions during the writing process so you focus on your typing as you do your creative thinking. You will not find much of the formatting options, in fact you will not find ANY visible formatting option at all because the available formatting options are done through character commands such as *, # or -.

For example # is a Headline in Writer, *will be Italic* and **is BOLD**. You can view the rest in video, or better download it for a try.

Output of Writer saves as text file and that's very much it. There is no share option either. A welcoming document comes with the Writer also serves as a Help file.

I like Writer but Will I be using it for my writing? I don't think so because as much as I like to have a quick and simple app to write down notes and articles, Writer is just too simple for my requirement even though I did like the use of character commands/tags for formatting. I am very happy with the Notes app.

Let me start by saying Mr. Ludo is the best and the coolest Ludo game I played on any computing device ever. Ludo is one of the best indoor board games that can bring entire family to sit together and chill. No matter what age they are Ludo can bring the fun out in the open. And I am more than happy to find a good one.

Mr. Ludo for Android, developed by YoAmbulante Ltd. has a “Escape from Office” theme going on. First game is your first day at office (personally I think it should have been the trickiest one) followed by 4 more sets. In the last game you retire. All this stages have different backgrounds and different interiors. There is also an option to Customize your game play for more control. With customize you can play it with family members around you just like traditional Ludo board.

Game play of Mr. Ludo is fun, easy and fast. Visuals are very pleasing and the characters are always entertaining, because they are tiny people instead of discs. You have one dice to Roll (personally I always preferred two). You keep rolling Dice on your turn till you get the lucky 6. With the 6 you can start making your run or there is a VIP card you can use to get out of the box for the price of 6.

If you are tired of playing against Android, you have option to go online and play with your friends. I wish there was a camera window to see other players' faces during the game.

Storage is one of the biggest concerns in modern smart phones and in tablets. Specially the low-priced Android mobiles and tablets that comes with smaller storage, ran out of space to quick so we will talk about Androids right now. Android have second largest applications library for us to install number of apps, but most of the handsets don't come with storage big enough to handle many apps.

For example I tend to install a lot of apps from Google’s Official Application Store known as Play, including very heavy games, big business application, browsers and graphics applications. I have to try these apps for making video demos, tutorial or reviews. My 8gb internal storage doesn't allow me to install that many apps and very often I get to the point where my data stream choked on this storage problem so bad it even stop fetching my emails.

Here are few tips based on how I handle storage problem in my Android Tablet(s)

• Use External SD cards to store pictures, songs, music, ebooks, videos or just any other file.
• Remember to Move photos you took from camera or downloaded from Internet or transferred through Bluetooth to SD Card as often as you can to keep internal storage and Ram free for some app you may install.
• Android install apps in Ram however users can move an app to internal storage using Settings --> Apps. Make sure whenever you install an app, move it to SD Card.
• Check in Settings --> Storage if you can set your SD Card for Default Write Disk. If you have this feature, Enable it. And do not forget to switch it back to SD Card when you removed and put your external card back in your device.
• Make sure whenever you uninstall an app you first Clear Data in the Settings --> App.
• Make sure you don't have an app you hardly use. Uninstall it from settings after Clear Data.
• If you have apps that read RSS feeds make sure you remove old feeds you no longer needs. Some apps offer auto removal of old feeds, enable those settings.
• Most importantly if you are big on Internet surfing, Make sure you do regular clean up of Internet Browsers.
  
  I found that Internet Browsers eat a large part of storage. I had apps to clean up caches but that was just not working out well so now I do the cleaning manually from Settings.
  
  Warning: Cleaning your Internet Browsers Data will remove browser history and any settings you may have set. It will reset browser from the very start. You will have to sign in to websites again. But on the positive side, you can get yourself hundreds of important mbs free.

Ever since government blocked YouTube in Pakistan, people are trying to find either an alternate or a way to gain access to YouTube because speaking of truth, there is NOTHING out there like YouTube. It is not the video sharing or the website that has value, but the nature of humongous library.



I recently ^come across^ Tune.pk, a video sharing site based in Pakistan and a very decent establishment for that matter. In political forums and on Facebook I have seen links from Tune.pk but I assumed it was just another Politics-only place so I never tried to go to the website (assumption is a bad habit indeed) until last week when a forced redirection took me to Tune.pk

The site is not bad, clearly Pakistani video lovers made it a home. Most of the contents I found there are political, captured from local TV channels. Others are taken from YouTube. Very little of the videos are original.

Besides the website, supporting Android app is also a neat product. The demo of Tune.pk for Android is here to give you an idea. The app can play videos without any trouble on your Android mobiles and tablets. UI for searching and listing videos are easy to get to. However in App, login using Facebook option is not available, which I found very frustrating at times.

You must have seen the recent PTCL EVO Tab's posters plastered everywhere and their commercials running on the TV channels at prime time slots. A dual core 7 inches Android 4.0 (aka Icecream Sandwich) based Tablet for 18,000 Pakistani rupees with 3 months unlimited (God knows how much GB bandwidth they are calling unlimited this time) free Internet access using built-in 3G. After 3 months you will be paying for the Internet you will use. It sounds a good if you are an average consumer looking to update your tech trend and want to be one of cools.

But in reality, compare to the devices available for the same price point, or the specs range today at the time of writing this piece (October 2013) EVO Tab is an over-priced, outdated piece of machine.

The current wave of tablets available in Pakistan's market are Quad core, a GB of RAM, at least 8gb of internal storage, made by well established brands are priced under or around 15,000 Pakistani rupees.

And if you look more into the market you will easily find even better deals for a lot better spec tablets, with the slightest affordable compromises. For example the one I have been checking - Ainol Novo7 Numy AX1 Dual Sim GSM 3G built-in 7 inch Android 4.2 JellyBean Tablet (or phablet?) for 14,000 Pakistani rupees and less.

I tried to find the manufacturer of EVO Tab but return empty handed however one thing is for sure it is not Samsung. My guess is Huawei because in Pakistan they are lead supplier of these equipments and their quality is trustworthy. Yet even their latest tablets cost less and pack double the power.

Having said that, you now have right to ask if this EVO Tab is a complete waste? No. It will not be a fast device, it will not run many of the fascinating games you must have heard or seen Android users are playing, but it will take care most of your basic tasks very well. Such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Internet Browsing, Skype, watching movies and songs, games from very big collection and several other things – not necessary to do them all at once due to 512mb of Ram and 4GB of storage. With 512mb of RAM you will not enjoy the widespread world of Android apps but you will get enough to taste it. You will of course love the display.

My advice as always is to go online to do some basic research before you go out to buy a computing device including Tablets, or SmartPhone. Do not be lazy to walk into shops and ask the prices, push dealers to find the minimum price they can get to before finalizing your deal. Buying online without checking your China computing devices is not a good idea for now.

Also always search for the public reviews, always search your desired electronics item with 'problem' and 'trouble' type of keywords to get familiar with the known issues.

Tablets are latest growing trend in Pakistan and the hottest device that is keep getting out of stock right after arriving is Ainol's latest offering is 7inchs Novo7 Numy AX1 also known as Poseidon in many other parts of the world. How hot and in-demand this new tablet is? We had to track this baby down for 15 days all over the place before we finally manage to get one for ourselves before the stocks dried on us again.

And the wait was worth it.

Novo7's latest family member is pack with about everything you can imagine to be in your perfect tablet for this price, of course with a few compromises to keep the price under 15,000 Pakistani Rupees. But IF you are well connected in the market, you can find very good deal.

First thing to go is the last season's processor and GPU. GPU now is one of the highlights in AX1 for geeks where for consumers BlueTooth, Dual GSM and 3G sim slots, FM Radio and GPS chip would do the trick. These Quad core units are much faster and smoother than the previous ones I have checked. Rest of the specs are as follows:

• Very low sound for me, but sound quality itself is good

Well, personally none of the compromises holding me down from having a good experience of using Numy AX1. You can always avoid sharp edges or buttons by changing angle of palms and fingers. It just takes a little time to get used to it.

Speed and experience is great. Heavy games that I saw slightly lagging during the game play on few other tablets are smooth on Numy AX1.

Browsing is fast thanks to really improved wifi this time, signals are strong compare to my last tablet. I noticed the browsers are fast as well, so it is not only the improved hardware but improved software too.

I believe Android Jelley Bean 4.2 is also contributing in faster speed and overall better performance in this device.

I installed one of my regular sims in Numy AX1 and to my surprise it is getting stronger signals at dead zones within the house. Our location is a big dead zone for any mobile company. Very few connection manage to stay barely alive inside the walls so I was NOT expecting a single bar at all in a low cost ^China^ device.

Screen, for a low tech display looks better for me. I did not have had trouble using the lowest resolution before anyways. Brightness at the lowest point is still very good indoors lights that I actually had to check twice if the brightness is not up around 50%. I did a quick outdoor run and it was not too bad either. You wouldn’t be able to see anything sideways thought.

I am killing my battery twice a day like clockwork from 100% full charge doing mix of every thing, in which installing apps, extensive browsing, at lowest display brightness, wifi always on, sim always active with the low signal zone that itself is a battery killing task. All extra notification sounds and vibrations are turned off. I get 5 hours of work time. On my last tablet it was same time but for far less specs, lowest screen resolution and brightness.

I don't know about others but I check browsers/browsing speed using Facebook's full site on a tablet or a smartphone. Facebook's full website sucks the life out of any system. Browsers other than Opera Mobile Classic on Numy AX1 did wonderful job driving it with good browsing experience on full Facebook website. Opera Mobile Classic felt slightly slower but handles things much better. Now I don't have to use Facebook’s mobile alternates anymore, which means I can operate my Facebook Pages million times better.

All in all, you must have got the idea I love this new device despite some of its obvious weaknesses. The price is great, performance and built is superb. Very satisfying for now and I hope it will stay this way for a long time.

Sony Mobiles or previously known as Sony Ericsson never disappointed the mobile industry with their amazing drool worthy mobile designs even though their specs sheet comes short of the excitement for geeky and hardcore fans of big numbers on paper, and repeatedly entitled as an outdated company. Sony has seen some worst time in last few years. At one point their profit value literary gone to 0 but they never stop what they do best.

Their real users always praise their Android optimization at best, the built quality and hardware design were never let anyone down while some other companies were busy building their good names by mimicking most selling handsets.
